The Programme’s Components

The EMPSWE has 3 parts (see section 3 of this manual). The basic components of part 1 (up to the Postgraduate Certificate) and part 2 (up to the Postgraduate Diploma) are modules, which may be either taught modules or Independent Study Modules (ISM). A module is composed of the following elements, which will differ in combination according to the nature of the module and the way it is delivered:
A total of 120 hours of study/research activity made up in a variety of ways which include:

contact time in taught sessions with module tutors;
directed study (involving specific tasks related to the module set by tutors for completion in your own time);
personal research (which may include undertaking a project, reading, work with children, work with colleagues, investigation of a topic of interest).

These different activities lead to the submission of an assignment of 4-5,000 words, or its equivalent (for assignments see later sections of this manual).
